JN.1 is a new sub-variant of Omicron.
The WHO has named it a “variant of interest” because of its rapidly increasing spread globally.
It was first detected on the 25th of August and is now the most dominant strain of COVID-19 in the U.S.
So far, it’s been found in over 40 countries and currently makes up over 40% all COVID cases worldwide.
While new variants tend to evade the immune system more effectively than previous variants, luckily there’s no evidence to suggest it’s any more dangerous.
All COVID-19 diagnostic tools, including rapid antigen and PCR test – should be able to detect the new strain. And luckily, our current vaccines are still effective, too. Vaccines continue to be our best defence against severe infection and hospitalization with this new strain.
