Arcturus: A new COVID-19 Strain Linked to Conjunctivitis
The Arcturus variant (XBB.1.16), a new Omicron strain, is linked to conjunctivitis and spreads faster than previous COVID-19 variants. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), it accounts for 10% of US coronavirus cases. People with this strain may experience conjunctivitis alongside typical COVID-19 symptoms.

LACDPH officials caution that eye-related symptoms should not be dismissed as allergies, particularly around vulnerable individuals. The WHO classifies Arcturus as a "variant of interest," meaning it is spreading but not yet a "variant of concern."

Earlier this year, the strain was reported in India, quickly spreading to over 30 countries. The LACDPH states that Arcturus may cause severe health issues in older patients and those with pre-existing conditions, who should take extra precautions.

Existing COVID-19 vaccines appear to protect against Arcturus, as it is a version of the Omicron variant. However, the emergence of new strains underlines the need to adapt our protective measures. Early information on Arcturus may help strengthen our efforts against COVID-19 and raise awareness of this new variant.
